Walmart's own Great Value Chicken Broth was recalled by its manufacturer, TreeHouse Foods, Inc., in British Columbia, Canada, after it was discovered that packaging failures could lead to spoilage — with information later coming out that live organisms could be the cause of spoilage . The broth, which is sold in nine U.

S. states, was recently given a Class II risk level by the U.S.

Food and Drug Administration (FDA). A Class II risk level, according to the FDA, is "a situation in which use of or exposure to a violative product may cause temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences or where the probability of serious adverse health consequences is remote." In other words, consuming the product could make you ill but not severely, unless underlying health conditions are factors.

The recall was initiated on Dec. 11, 2024, and the Class II risk level was set this Tuesday. In its page detailing the recall , the FDA wrote under the section labeled "Reason for Recall" that the product had the "potential for packaging failures that could compromise the sterility of the product, resulting in spoilage.

" That includes infestation from bacteria, yeasts, molds and other contaminates. It can be difficult to tell if the food has spoiled or not, but there can sometimes be signs based on its look, taste or texture. A lot of the time, however, the spoilage is undetectable until its effects are felt in the body.

Specifically, the broth was sold in stores in Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Louisiana, Missouri, Mississippi, Oklahoma, Tennessee and Texas — all Southern states. The broth reportedly had "best if used by" dates of March 25, 2026, and the lot code "98F09234" printed on the packaging.

There were also two unique product codes (UPCs) — the retail unit one was "007874206684," while the case one was "078742066844." The product name, as sold by Walmart, is "Great Value, Chicken Broth, 48 oz.," according to the FDA, and it also contained "aseptic paper cartons, 6 retail units per case, 120 cases/pallet.

" Over 2,000 cases were recalled, making for 12,000 cans of broth. The recall was also voluntary — TreeHouse Foods initiated it, then told the FDA about it, leading to the investigation and testing that eventually resulted in the Class II risk level classification.
