After months of rumours and endless speculation, we're now only a day away from finding out what Apple has in store for its iPhone 16 range of devices. The US technology giant is holding a major launch event at its HQ in Cupertino on September 9 and it looks 100% certain that a number of flagship devices will be shown to the world . If you've been waiting patiently for a new iPhone to be announced you'll clearly be excited by the impending announcement.
However, things might not be quite so good if you own an older model and are looking to trade it in. According to the resale team at Sell Cell, prices for ageing iPhones - including the iPhone 15.- could be about to tumble by over 10%.
Ouch! Sell Cell reckons that its latest data indicates previous Apple events have resulted in current call makers losing value. It makes sense as those phones will no longer be the best of the best once Apple showcases what is new. A good example of this drop is what happened last year.
Sell Cell says that in the 14 days leading up to the iPhone 15 launch, the iPhone 14 Pro Max 1TB dropped from a trade-in value of $961 (£760) on August 8th, to $857 (£651) on September 22nd. In the 14 days prior to release, that figure equated to a $104 (£79) loss. In the same timeframe, the iPhone 13 Pro Max 1TB lost the most from the 13-Series handsets.

If history repeats itself, the iPhone 15 may suddenly be worth a lots less later this week. "Deciding when to sell your iPhone can be challenging, so having accurate information is key to making a smart decision. Knowing the best timing can help you maximize your return and secure the best trade-in deal," Sell Cell explained.
"If you wait too long, you could see your phone’s value drop by as much as 8.3% of its value; an iPhone can lose up to $133 in value from 28 days prior to release, up to the point of the new handset’s release and up to $104 from 14 days prior to the release. This was the case for the iPhone 14 Pro Max 1TB back in 2023.

What we are expecting are devices that are faster, more efficient and offer some design tweaks such as new colours. Rumours suggest that all models will also get a new "Capture" button on the case which will make it faster to snap photos.
