Prayagraj: The aspirants protesting against the Uttar Pradesh Public Service Commission (UPPSC) since Monday called off their stir on Friday after the UPPSC authorities rescheduled the PCS (Preliminary) examination 2024 to Dec 22. Accommodating the needs of aspirants, the examination will be conducted in a single day instead of on two days, earlier scheduled for Dec 7 and 8. The rescheduled exam will take place on Dec 22 in two shifts, from 9:30am to 11:30am and 2:30pm to 4:30pm.

The change aims to ease travel and scheduling issues for candidates, enabling them to complete the exam in one day. Prompted by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, UPPSC authorities took swift action to revise the schedule and address the aspirants' demands efficiently. After postponing the review officer (RO)/assistant review officer (ARO) exams, the UPPSC authorities constituted a four-member committee headed by senior member (UPPSC) Kalp Raj Singh to examine all aspects of the RO/ARO exams.

The committee will submit its report shortly. The aspirants said that they would look into the report of the UPPSC committee regarding the RO/ARO exam and act accordingly. Majority of aspirants protesting in front of the UPPSC gate since Monday, returned from the protest site on Friday morning.

After the stir was called off, the police allowed vehicular movement on one side of the road of Stanley Road on Prayagraj-Lucknow highway bringing relief to commuters. DCP (city) Abhishek Bharti told TOI that the number of protesters had started reducing since Thursday night following the announcement by the UPPSC authorities to hold PCS (preliminary) exams 2024 in a single day. "Police authorities were taking help of drones to assess the crowd of protesters outside the UPPSC headquarters on all five days and found that the number started declining from Thursday midnight," he said.

Earlier in the day, there were altogether 40-50 students and aspirants sitting outside the UPPSC building, but their number reduced to 10 to 15 by Friday evening. Student leader PK Pandey said, "Aspirants have called off their stir as 90% of their demands were met." "We will wait for the committee report regarding the RO/ARO exam and will decide on further action once the report of the committee is tabled," he added.

He said, "We have asked all students and aspirants to vacate the spot and prepare for exams. The majority of students were satisfied, and those still protesting were due to their personal reasons or protest.".
