Home | Upgrade to Huguenot Tunnel will have economic benefits for WC: Creecy Transport Minister Barbara Creecy says the R4.5 billion project to construct a new section of the Huguenot Tunnel on the N-1 national road, holds significant economic benefits for the Western Cape. This week, she conducted an inspection of the tunnel that the roads agency SANRAL operates.

The tunnel, which is 3.9 kilometres long, is the longest in Africa. The upgrade is expected to be completed in the next three to four years.

Creecy says the project will improve mobility, reduce congestion and create jobs. “We are seeing increasing congestion in this tunnel. At the moment, there’s only one lane moving either way.

The intention once this project is complete is to make sure that we have two lanes moving south and two lanes moving north. Clearly, this stretch of the road is really important because it connects the ports of Cape Town and Saldanha to the hinterland. We know that this is a very significant agricultural region but obviously there’s also traffic coming from the north of the region and country as well.
