North Texas picked up a commitment from Miami transfer quarterback Reese Poffenbarger on Monday, when the Mean Green moved quickly to fill the void created by the departure of Chandler Morris. Poffenbarger announced his decision to continue his career with the Mean Green on his X account. Reese Poffenbarger “One last rodeo, and it’s only right to have it in the great state,” Poffenbarger wrote.

The 6-foot Maryland native spent last season with the Hurricanes, where he served as a backup. Poffenbarger played the previous two seasons at Albany, where he was one of the most prolific quarterbacks playing at the Football Championship Subdivision level. He threw for 3,603 yards and 36 touchdowns with 13 interceptions in 2023.

Poffenbarger finished his two-year career with Great Danes with 5,969 yards, 56 touchdowns. He was among the top quarterbacks available on the transfer market. UNT was looking for a new quarterback over the last few days after Chandler Morris announced his decision to transfer.

The former Highland Park standout arrived at UNT ahead of this season after a stint at TCU and excelled. Morris threw for 3,774 and 31 touchdowns in his lone year at UNT before entering the transfer portal. He committed to Virginia this week.

Eric Morris has directed one of the nation’s most prolific offenses in each of his first two seasons at UNT with a newcomer at quarterback each year. Chandler Rogers came to UNT from Louisiana-Monroe and threw for 3,382 yards and 29 touchdowns in 2023. Rogers entered the transfer portal following the season and landed at Cal, where he has served as a backup this year.

The Mean Green turned to Morris this season and saw him pick up where Rogers left off. He was a second-team All-American Athletics Conference selection. Morris spoke late in the year about his approach to reloading at quarterback.

“Our system changes a little bit every year just how we’re built,” Morris said. “You have to adjust as a play-caller to where our skill sets are at wide receiver, offensive line and running back.” Morris will have a new quarterback to work with this spring, one who is looking for the right fit in his second stop at the major college level after leaving Albany, where he thrived.

Poffenbarger thew for just 20 yards for Miami this season. He was a finalist for the Walter Payton Award that goes to the top offensive player at the FCS level at Albany in 2023. Poffenbarger is similar to Chandler Morris in that he’s undersized at 6-feet and excelled at the high school level.

Poffenbarger was named the Maryland Offensive Player of the Year and was a first-team all-state quarterback. He’ll soon arrive at UNT, where the Mean Green are hoping he’ll become the third player to excel as a one-and-done quarterback under Eric Morris. Success!
