FARGO — One holiday do-gooder left something a little different in the Salvation Army's iconic red kettles this year. Volunteer bell ringer Kathy Swenson had just sat down to sort out the day's donations with her fellow helpers in Fargo on Nov. 27 when she found a "treasure," according to a release from the Salvation Army.
There was a gold coin in the kettle. More specifically, a 2016 Australian Gold Kangaroo coin. This coin is one ounce of nearly pure gold, the release said, and has a face value of $100 backed by the Australian government but, on the open market, is worth nearly $3,000.
"The Australian Kangaroo Gold Bullion Coin originated in 1987 with the Perth Mint's introduction of the 'Australian Nugget' series, featuring 99.99% fine gold coins in one ounce and half ounce weights," the release said. "Over the years, the series has evolved, yet it remains among the world's most sought-after gold bullion products.
" While one person donated a treasure, it takes a village to fund the Salvation Army's annual Christmas drive. So far, the community has donated $350,000 of its $900,000 goal. Those looking to help ring bells this holiday season can sign up at www.
