For Mousley believes the ability to replicate the pace of a seamer is what sets him apart from rivals. The 23-year-old took his first two international wickets in the resounding seven-wicket win over West Indies on Sunday night that opened up a 2-0 Twenty20 series lead with three to play.

Quizzed on the 72mph yorker that castled West Indies top scorer Rovman Powell at the Kensington Oval, Mousley quipped: ‘I’ve bowled quicker than that,’ alluding to a delivery of 83mph in the Hundred this summer. ‘It’s probably not traditional off spin but it’s one of those things which I’ve learnt to bring into my favour, and it’s OK to be different as a bowler,’ Mousley said. It’s something I’ve always had, it’s just trying to keep it to my advantage.’ Such was his impact in an unfamiliar middle overs role that captain Jos Buttler brought Mousley back for the final over, removing Romario Shepherd to claim two for 29. Not since Michael Yardy fired in his left-armers for the T20 World Cup-winning team of 2010 has an England side featured a spinner of Mousley’s ilk.

‘You just have to be different,’ he said. ‘If you stand still in T20 cricket, you get found out. It’s trying to stay ahead of the curve, be on the balls of your feet and learn as much as you possibly can from different games.

’ Mousley received a ringing endorsement from Buttler, who said: ‘West Indies wouldn’t have seen much of him, and he’s pretty unique in the way he bowls. ‘I like his character. He always seems to want those situations.

Having been around him for a little bit now, he just seems like someone who always wants the ball in hand, or wants to be involved in the hot spots in the field. And obviously, he’s a real competitor with the bat.’ Mousley’s early progress has undoubtedly been catalysed by the presence of county room-mate Jacob Bethell in the squad.

But he played down any sense of rivalry, saying: ‘We use each other more to bounce ideas. We train together.

Try to get better together. Playing with him here is really special.’ Buttler added: ‘They’ve done brilliantly well.

Everyone’s seen the talent that Bethell has and where he can go, but a lot of the transition to this level is dealing with the occasion, the extra scrutiny, the bigger crowds, and they look very comfortable.’ Meanwhile, Jafer Chohan, the uncapped Yorkshire leg-spinner, has returned home for a break before stints with England Lions and in Australia’s Big Bash League.
