Local kids in the area celebrated National Unicorn Day with a story, crafts, snacks and an apperance by a an actual unicorn.

Rainbows, crafts and a life-sized unicorn costume helped bring the magic to National Unicorn Day at Nancy Carson Library. Children and families gathered for a morning of whimsy on April 9, taking part in unicorn-themed storytime, hands-on crafts, sweet treats and a visit from a pink inflatable unicorn that had kids laughing and lining up for hugs and photos. The event was inspired by the "Phoebe and Her Unicorn" book series, a favorite among young readers, said Youth Services Librarian Renee Burton.

She said the timing was perfect, falling during Spring Break for local schools. “I was like, perfect, let’s have a Unicorn Day,” Burton said. Burton said she always aims to host events that offer something for kids of all ages and interests.

“I try to find something that everyone can come to,” she said. Parent Lina Gunn brought her daughters, Alana and Golden, to the event for a colorful morning out. “She likes the pretty colors and how they are so nice and sweet,” Gunn said of her daughter’s love for unicorns.

Augusta resident Candace Sowell joined with her two nieces, watching them color and craft with excitement. “This would be such an awesome activity for some young ladies to do,” she said. She especially appreciated the storytime portion, saying she liked that the book featured characters who looked like her nieces.

Sowell added that she often looks for library events in both Aiken and Augusta to keep the girls engaged. “So I’m always checking Aiken County Library and the Richmond County Library just to see what’s going on,” she said, “so we can have something fun to do instead of staying at home playing video games and being bored.” Lizette Neal said she brought her granddaughter, Lilly Oglesby, for a Spring Break activity.

“She loves it,” Neal said. “She loved the stories, the unicorn that came in ..

. she obviously liked making the crown.” And while coloring her unicorn, young AJ Hubbard said she likes unicorns because of their colors.

"I like rainbow unicorns, she said..
