Peshawar - UNHCR Representative in Pakistan, Ms Phillipa Candler, called on chairman of Qaumi Watan Party, Aftab Ahmad Khan Sherpao, on Monday at his residence in Islamabad to discuss the prevailing situation concerning the repatriation of Afghan refugees. It was agreed that the repatriation process should be conducted in accordance with the principles of dignity and honour. As this remains primarily a humanitarian issue, and given that Pakistan has hosted Afghan refugees for an unprecedented length of time, it was emphasized that this goodwill should not be compromised under any circumstances.
Sherpao stressed the importance of closely monitoring the entire repatriation process to prevent harassment and blackmail by local authorities, including the police. He also highlighted the need for engagement at all levels and expressed his willingness to continue playing a proactive role in fostering people-to-people contact to help normalize the situation.
