UNDP partnership to help Turkmenistan secure effective water future

A practicalseminar on water resource management was held in the Lebap regionof Turkmenistan, organized under the UN Development Programme(UNDP) initiative for the "Conservation and Sustainable Managementof Land Resources and High Nature Value Ecosystems in the Aral SeaBasin for Multiple Benefits," reports via UNDP. The seminar served as a platform for exchanging experiences inwater use planning amidst climate change, with participantsapplying a scientifically-backed Integrated Water ResourcesManagement (IWRM) approach. The two-day discussions emphasizedmeasures to enhance water use efficiency and protect waterresources, aiming to reduce costs and improve irrigation watersupply.

At the demonstration site in the Danew district, participantsshowcased wells designed to monitor land reclamation conditions andintroduced innovative irrigation technologies aimed at enhancingwater efficiency. Discussions also included the potential fordeveloping fish farming as an alternative income source for theregion. Turkmen representatives shared insights on rice cultivation inLebap, emphasizing local climate conditions and techniques forutilizing groundwater from the Amu Darya for drip irrigation.



Sponsored by the Global Environment Facility (GEF), the seminargathered stakeholders from various organizations, including theMinistry of Environment, the State Committee for Water Management,and local NGOs. This event represents a crucial step forTurkmenistan in advancing effective water resource management andpromoting sustainable development in the face of climatechange. Turkmenistan is committed to ensuring a sustainable water supplyas part of its national socio-economic development program, whichspans from two thousand eleven to two thousand thirty, in alignmentwith the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
