SAN ANTONIO — The UND men's basketball team won't have to wait long to seek revenge on Texas-San Antonio. UTSA knocked off UND 80-76 on Friday night in the Convocation Center in Texas. The two teams meet again Sunday at the Betty Engelstad Sioux Center at 2 p.
m. in Grand Forks. ADVERTISEMENT In the first meeting, UND squandered strong performances from role players Dariyus Woodson and Brian Mathews.
The Fighting Hawks were 15-for-30 from the free-throw line. Woodson poured in a career-high 21 points on 5-for-12 shooting from 3-point range. His previous career-high was 12 points.
Mathews had a season-high 18 minutes and countered with a season-high 13 points. The veteran post was 6-for-9 from the field and added seven rebounds. Deng Mayar also provided a boost with 10 points and 11 rebounds.
Amar Kuljuhovic had an identical stat line with 10 points and 11 rebounds. UND's starting backcourt struggled. Mier Panoam scored six points and was 1-for-9 shooting and 0-for-3 from deep.
Panoam, a first-year transfer from Tulane, brought out during the Summit League-Big Sky Challenge. The guard had 19 points against Eastern Washington and 22 against Weber State. ADVERTISEMENT However, Panoam has gone a combined 1-for-17 from the floor in back-to-back losses to Utah Valley and Texas-San Antonio.
Panoam did dish out seven assists against UTSA. Treysen Eaglestaff had 14 points on 5-for-12 shooting. He had a team-high four of UND's 14 turnovers.
UTSA was led by Primo Spears, who had 28 points on 11-for-17 shooting. UND trailed by as many as 13 in the second half before cutting the lead to five with 3:23 left on an Eaglestaff layup. The Hawks couldn't make much of a run from there, though, and never were closer than four the rest of the way.
