The UN Secretary-General’s Special Representative for Afghanistan and head of UNAMA, Roza Otunbayeva, will brief the UN Security Council on the situation in Afghanistan on Wednesday, following UNAMA’s quarterly report released on Tuesday. Tanja Fajon, Slovenia’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of foreign and European Affairs, will preside over the meeting. UNAMA’s latest report shows an increase in security incidents compared to the same period last year, stricter restrictions on women, and that over 24 million people still need humanitarian assistance.

In her last report, Otunbayeva mentioned that by August 30, only 24.9% of the $2.9 billion required for aid to Afghanistan had been provided.

The upcoming UN Security Council briefing is crucial in highlighting Afghanistan’s ongoing challenges, including the urgent need for humanitarian aid and security improvements. This comes amid a dire humanitarian crisis in Afghanistan, where suppressive policies, including banning women and girls from education and employment, have worsened the situation. Despite widespread criticism, the group has paid little attention to its international obligations.

These restrictive measures continue to draw condemnation from global organizations, but the lack of response from the authorities highlights the ongoing challenges in addressing Afghanistan’s growing crisis. Save my name, email, and website in this browser for the next time I comment. Δ.
