DULUTH — The Minnesota Duluth softball team was on the wrong end of a doubleheader sweep on Tuesday afternoon against red-hot St. Cloud State, falling 6-4 and 13-4 to the Huskies at Malosky Stadium. UMD starter Allison Luoma allowed three runs on six hits in three innings of work in game one.
Maddy Walsh took over to start the fourth and delivered two shutout innings before surrendering two runs on four hits in the sixth and a solo home run in the seventh. ADVERTISEMENT At the plate, the Bulldogs struck first with an Emma Ambroz sacrifice fly in the second inning and later added two more runs in the fourth off a bases-loaded single from Serena Timmer and a fielder’s choice out by Khendal Johnson. Ambroz added a second RBI in the seventh with a single to right field.
The Huskies (32-11, 11-4) finished with a 12-10 advantage in hits — five of which went for extra bases. Noelle Krumrie, Nicole Schmitt and Johnson each recorded two hits. Krumrie and Johnson accounted for two triples.
SCSU led 4-0 through three innings of game two and proceeded to blow the game wide open with a five-run fourth inning. Starter Allyssa Williams was pulled with the bases loaded and no outs to start the fourth inning in favor of Walsh, who pitched the next two innings. Luoma took over to start the sixth.
The Bulldogs cut the deficit to five in the fourth inning via a two-RBI single by Taryn Christopher and two more run-scoring base hits from Krumrie and Ambroz. Krumrie and Ambroz both finished with a pair of hits. Ambroz, Morgan McMillan and Kendal Jenkins tallied the team’s three extra-base hits with doubles.
SCSU finished with a 16-10 advantage in hits. Next up for UMD (28-14, 8-6) is a road doubleheader against Minnesota State Mankato on Saturday at noon. ADVERTISEMENT.
