UK supermarket with cheapest petrol revealed - it's not where you think

The cost of filling up can be a real drain on everyday expenses - here's where the price of a litre is the cheapest.

With spiralling living costs and the Government slashing the Winter Fuel Payment, Brits across the country are looking for ways to save money. One major area of concern is the cost of filling up the car, with the price of petrol sky-rocketing following Vladimir Putin 's full-scale invasion of Ukraine . A litre of petrol cost a staggering 191.

43p in July 2022 - a few months following the Russian incursion - and although the price has come down, it remains high at 135.72p, according to the RAC. The RAC updates its figures on where the cheapest petrol can be found on an almost daily basis.



Express.co.uk has looked at the data and reveals where motorists may find the best value fuel.

The average price of a litre of petrol across the four major supermarkets that sell fuel - Asda, Morrisons, Sainsbury's, and Tesco - is 134p. Sainsbury's offers petrol between 140.9p-a-litre and 126.

9p-a-litre, at an average of 134.1p; Tesco's range is between 139.9p and 127.

9p, with same average price as Sainsbury's; Morrisons is next with a range between 138.7p and 129.7p, at an average of 133.

9p; Asda's highest price is 139.7p and its lowest is 126.7p, giving it the lowest average price at 133.

6p. So if you drive a petrol car, Asda may be your best bet at the pumps. However, with such fine margins between the supermarkets and fluctuating prices, the best value vendor may soon change.

On average, a litre of diesel across the four major fuel-flogging supermarkets is 139.7p. Morrisons has the highest average price, with a range of 144.

7p-a-litre to 136.7p-a-litre; Sainsbury's is next with an average of 140p, with a range between 146.9p and 132.

9p; Asda's range is 146.7p to 132.7p, an average of 139.

5p; Tesco's diesel price is on average the lowest at 139.3p - a range of 145.9p to 131.

9p. Diesel drivers should therefore head to Tesco for the best rates. Again, this may soon change.
