The UK could be hit by a surprise bout of snow in a matter of days as bitterly cold weather engulfs the early days of spring. Weather maps produced by WXCharts.com show white and purple patches appearing over several counties on April 4, indicating snow.
According to the data, parts of Scotland and northern England could be blanketed in snow throughout the night as temperatures hover around freezing. The maps sjow around 5-10cm per hour could fall in north west England and north Wales , with the Scottish highlands also likely to be covered. Elsewhere, heavy rain could batter the UK, with blue parts of the weather maps highlighting that as much as 10mm per hour could fall across the midlands and parts of southern England.
Later in the day, temperatures look set to become more settled, with some areas of the country reaching double figures by midday. Also on April 4, weather maps turn icy blue that could seen temperatures hover just above freezing during the early morning in parts of northern England and Scotland. A Met Office forecast for March 31 until april 9 does not acknowledge snow but does predict cold nights, saying: "Some periods of unsettled weather could develop at times.
"If this happens any rain or showers are most likely to affect southern or western areas. "However the main signal is for dry and fine weather across the country. "Temperatures will likely be around or above normal and feeling warm during the day, and some cold nights are still possible when skies are clear.
" The snowfall could be the last in the UK for many months, with temperatures set to rise the following week. By April 9, the country could be basking in glorious sunshine, with many parts of the country set for a mini heatwave with temperatures as high as 18C. This will continue into the following day with parts of Yorkshire, Birmingham and Wales due for highs of 20C.
