Uglies Uglies is one of the worst-reviewed Netflix original movies in recent memory, but it still managed to stay on top of the Top 10 list for a while. Now it’s been dethroned by a new offering, and the future of it as a potential series remains unknown. The Garfield Movie has now arrived on Netflix and the kid-friendly film is now #1 on the site.
That’s not a shock given that half or more of the list is usually made up of kids movies as parents look for something to throw on (myself included). My favorite thing about this continues to be that The Super Mario Bros. Movie has not left the Top 10 list for nearly a year now.
Top 10 As for Uglies, it’s a deeply bad movie which has a 15% score on Rotten Tomatoes with an also-not-good 47% score among its audience. The film is an adaptation of a 2006 YA book and it..
.very much feels like an adaptation of a 2006 YA book, complete with visual effects from that era, at times. It stars Netflix favorite Joey King who was reportedly a fan of the books and helped get the movie made.
The original book did branch into a trilogy like so many other books of that time, but it’s unclear if Netflix will be moving forward with any installments. Given the end of the film where (spoilers) Joey King’s face is CGI-deepfaked as a “Pretty,” I’m not exactly sure how that would work unless they abandoned that look entirely. (Just use her normal face?).
As for the rest of the list, Rebel Ridge is still performing extremely well at #3, the thriller being one of Netflix’s best reviewed films in recent memory, so it’s quite a contrast from Uglies, and easy to recommend to any fan of Reacher or just tough guy movies in general. Another Netflix original, His Three Daughters, boasts a stellar cast of Elizabeth Olsen, Natasha Lyonne and Carrie Coon, has arrived with a stunning 98% from critics with 113 reviews in, putting it above even Rebel Ridge. It may not reach as high as others due to the fact that it’s something of a prestige film, but it’s cool to see.
