By Benadetta Chiwanda Mia: United General Insurance (UGI) Limited has awarded K10 million to students at Kamuzu University of Health Sciences (Kuhes) who excelled in their studies during the 2022-23 academic year. The awards, given to those who made it onto the Dean’s List, honour students who achieved distinctions with marks of 75 percent and above. Initially targeting 50 students with over K4 million, the programme expanded to reach nearly 100 students with about K10 million.

UGI Chief Operating Officer, MacDonald Chibwe, underscored the long-standing partnership between UGI and Kuhes, describing the institution as reliable business partner. “We are glad because these achievements symbolise excellence. We are known for excellence, so we are delighted to award these students and acknowledge their efforts.

“We are the risk carrier for Kuhes across the country. Beyond that, we have collaborated on various ventures such as research conferences, supported them during Covid-19 and plan to strengthen our partnership in research,” Chibwe said. Elida Mwenewanda, a top-performing student with seven distinctions, attributed her success to consistency and hard work.

“Actually, I aimed for nine distinctions and believed I could achieve it. I committed myself, worked hard, had sleepless nights and engaged in many discussions with seniors,” Mwenewanda said. Kuhes Director of Student Affairs, Benjamin Kumwenda, said the Dean’s List awards aim to encourage students by recognising their achievements.

“When we acknowledge talent, skills and intelligence, it motivates others to work hard. We also award those in their third and fourth years to encourage them to finish their studies with high grades,” Kumwenda said. The awards ranged from K75,000 to K200,000 in cash prizes.
