The Texas Woman's soccer team achieved its first home win of the 2024 season by defeating the Lady Bisons 1-0 on Wednesday night. TWU (3-1-0) held off Harding (1-3-0) in the last minute of play by making some crucial saves. This victory improved their home record to 1-1.

Giselle Gutierrez scored the winning goal for the Pioneers, marking her first goal of the season. The goal was set up by defender Mia Thaxton with a well-placed ball into the box. This win was the fourth for the Pioneers against Harding all-time and their first home win against the Lady Bisons.

In the first 15 minutes of play, Alyssa Striker took two shots to test the Harding goalkeeper, showing early aggression. Throughout the first half, TWU's attacking pressure created more scoring opportunities, with Abby Powers attempting two on-target shots that were saved. Amanda Farris made two crucial saves to keep the game tied at 0-0, denying potential game-tying goals by the Lady Bisons.

In the 86th minute, Gutierrez capitalized on a stunned Lady Bison defense to score the game-winning goal, assisted by Mia Thaxton. During the final minute of play, the Pioneers' defensive effort held off Harding, with Farris and Rylee Avery making two big saves to keep the Lady Bisons from scoring. "I am very happy with the result and how our team battled late to get the game-winning goal," TWU coach Babak Abouzar said.

"We showed a lot of grit and determination today, but I feel like we left too many opportunities on the table and we have to get better at finishing. Everything outside our attacking 18 is really good, but you win games by scoring goals. Our team knows that and is committed to getting better in and around the goal.

" Up next, TWU will take a trip to Arkadelphia, Arkansas, next to take on Ouachita Baptist on Saturday at 1 p.m. Success! An email has been sent to with a link to confirm list signup.
