Two teenagers, 17, arrested after young father, 30s, left fighting for life following suspected Mullingar assault

TWO teenagers have been arrested in connection with a suspected assault that took place in Mullingar, Co Westmeath last weekend. A young father, aged in his 30s, remains in critical condition after he was discovered unconscious with "serious injuries" on Grove Street in the early hours of Saturday morning. A scene was held for technical examination and an incident room was established at Mullingar Garda Station following the discovery shortly after 1am.

Gardai confirmed this afternoon that two youths in the Mullingar area were arrested in connection with the incident this morning. The teenagers, who are both 17-years-old, are currently detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act 1984 at a Garda Station in the Midlands. The injured man remains in a critical condition in Beaumont Hospital .



Gardai said they are continuing to "investigate all circumstances" surrounding the incident and have urged anyone who may have any information to come forward. In a statement today, a garda spokesperson said: "Gardai are renewing their appeal for witnesses to this incident to come forward. "Any persons who may have camera footage (including dash-cam) from the areas around Grove Street and Mullingar Town centre between 12:30 am and 1:30 am are asked to make this footage available to investigating Gardaí.

"Anyone with any information is asked to contact Mullingar Garda Station on 01 666 9000, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any Garda Station."
