Chennai: Two software engineers were arrested for smuggling methamphetamine from Bengaluru and other cities by train and road in order to sell it to mostly techies in the city's suburban areas. Based on a specific tip-off, a special Anti-Narcotics Intelligence Unit (ANIU) team tracked the suspects involved in smuggling and selling methamphetamine in the city. An investigation officer said, "It was one of the suspects who gave details about the involvement of software engineers in peddling the drug to the techies.

" Based on the information provided by the suspect, the team apprehended Shyam Sundar, 25, a resident of Velachery. The team conducted surprise checks at a Tamil Nadu Housing Board (TNHB) house in Velachery. Police said Shyam Sundar was used as a transit to smuggle the drug from other cities by courier.

The team later arrested Shyam Sundar's associate Jagadish, 26, also a software engineer, a native of Padi near Ambattur. Inquiries revealed that Jagadish and Shyam Sundar worked at a software company in Taramani in 2020 and 2021. During the pandemic, the two sold ganja to software engineers, as Tasmac shops remained closed.

After they created a network of consumers buying ganja, the two moved on to peddling meth after procuring it from Bengaluru and other cities. They widened the clientele by opening exclusive WhatsApp and Telegram groups for clients. After they developed a strong network in other cities, the two bought the drugs at a cheap price and then sold them for 3,500 for each gram of methamphetamine.

The police team recovered 5.5g of methamphetamine from the two. The arrested Jagadish and Shyam Sundar were remanded in judicial custody after being produced before a magistrate court in the city.
