Toys for Tots elf Lynn Summers is married to another volunteer, Steve Summers, and they reside in Kahoka, Missouri. They have two children, Stephanie and Collin, and three grandchildren, Wyatt Little, and Brexlee and Brixon Summers. Here’s how they responded to some questions posed by Denise Nelson, coordinator for Toys for Tots of Lee Co IA & Clark Co MO.

Describe your favorite Christmas memory – Videotaping my kids on Christmas morning and watching their delighted faces. Also, when I was young, I remember getting a globe. I was so amazed.

Maybe that is why I have the travel bug! Describe your favorite Toys for Tots memory – The majority of families are so thankful and often there are so many choices that it’s great to be able to help them. I’m always amazed at the number of bikes that we are able to give away. Describe your role within Toys for Tots (events, warehouse, registration, canvassing, etc) – I’ve been in parades, helped with registration, helped at donation sites, and helped with set-up and delivery.

What do you do in your free time? – Travel and read. Why did you choose to volunteer with Toys for Tots? – The first year got me hooked! Looking at all of the generous donations and bikes and toys is enough to take your breath away! What’s your favorite quote? – “The more you practice the art of thankfulness, the more you have to be thankful for.” –Norman Vincent Peale.

What is something people do not know about you? – I have a closet full of costumes. I’m related via marriage to Howie Dorough of the Back Street Boys. How did you become involved in Toys for Tots? – A former educator that twisted my arm, and I’m glad she did! Describe your favorite Christmas memory – Videoing our kids on Christmas morning and seeing their delight as to what Santa brought them.

Describe your role within Toys for Tots – Registration, distribution of boxes, posting fliers, and picking up toys from distribution boxes. What do you do in your free time? – Travel, golf, and attend grandson’s events. Why did you choose to volunteer with Toys for Tots? – My wife encouraged me to do so.

There are many reasons to volunteer for Toys for Tots, and all of them are good ones, since the object is to make sure kids have a Merry Christmas who might otherwise not have one. To get more information or to volunteer, call Denise Nelson at 319-470-2981..
