Two men beaten to death on suspicion of theft in Kishoreganj

Two men were beaten to death on suspicion of theft in Kishoreganj's Austagram upazila this morning. The deceased have been identified as Nasir Uddin, 28, and Shahjahan Mia, 40, said Md Ruhul Amin, officer-in-charge of Austagram Police Station. The incident occurred at Deoghar Government Primary School area in the upazila around 7:30am, the OC said.

Quoting locals and witnesses, Md Mohiuddin, a member of Ward No 4 of Deoghar Union Parishad in the upazila, said that Nasir and Shahjahan allegedly stole a buffalo by boat from Monoharpur. Acting on information, locals apprehended them from the bank of the Ludda River in Deoghar area. They were then taken to Deoghar Government Primary School and tied up.



As the news spread, thousands of people gathered at the location and beat the two men to death, he said. The stolen buffalo has been recovered, but the boat used in the theft has not yet been identified, said OC Ruhul, adding that the bodies were sent to Shaheed Syed Nazrul Islam Medical College Hospital morgue for autopsy. Both the men had several theft and robbery cases against them with Nasirnagar Police Station, the OC said adding, arrest warrants were also issued against them in some of the cases.

Kishoreganj Additional Superintendent of Police (Crime and Operations) Al Amin Hossain told The Daily Star, "People cannot take the law into their own hands or beat someone to death on suspicion of theft. Everyone is entitled to legal proceedings. Action will be taken following an investigation.
