Two members of Nepal’s gang of burglars arrested

1 2 3 Pune: The Nigdi police arrested two members of a gang of burglars from Nepal, who stole cash and gold jewellery worth Rs 16.20 lakh from a businessman's bungalow in Nigdi in November last year. Their accomplice, who worked as the domestic help in that bungalow, spiked the drink of the businessman's son and daughter-in-law on November 24 last year.

She then took her three accomplices into the bungalow, who made off with the booty. The domestic help, who is from Nepal, started working at the businessman's house on November 6 last year. During his custodial interrogation, names of four more suspects were revealed. "Shahi also revealed that his accomplices fled to their villages in Nepal along with the booty," assistant police inspector Ambarish Deshmukh of Nigdi police told TOI. Deshmukh said that investigations also revealed that before the burglary at Nigdi, the gang stole jewellery from two more houses in Bengaluru in Karnataka.

"We then managed to get the social media profiles of the relatives of these men. We also got their new social media profiles. For the last five months, we were constantly monitoring their social media profiles," Deshmukh said.

He said that recently, the police got information that two of these gang members were in Bengaluru and were planning to return to Nepal by air. "Our team went to Bengaluru immediately. With the help of the local police and CISF staffers at the airport in Bengaluru, we took Navin Shahi (24) and Nar Bahadur Shahi (38) into custody.

We have recovered gold jewellery worth Rs4 lakh from the duo," he said. Deshmukh said the duo and their gang members target well-to-do people in different parts of the country. They used to send a couple to the houses of these people to work as domestic help.

After working for a few days, the domestic help used to spike either drinks or food of the owner. Their accomplices then used to steal the valuables from the bungalow. The gang then immediately used to leave for Nepal.

"We have detected four cases including two in Bengaluru, one in Nigdi, and a recent one at Cheemeni in Kasargod district in Kerala," Deshmukh said.
