Two Held for Torching Homes

Chennai: Two men were arrested for torching houses early on Tuesday at Ayanavaram . Police said it was the fallout of a brawl among Ganja users . Three schoolchildren lost their school bags and books in the incident.

No one was injured in the accident. However, four huts out of the 50 huts were fully gutted. Three children studying in a school lost their school bags and books in the fire accident .



Police said the arrested suspect, Niwas, 25, picked up a quarrel with one Sachin on Monday evening. Another resident, Appu Prasad, pacified and struck a compromise. Following this, Niwas' anger turned towards Appu Prasad.

Around 3 am on Tuesday, Niwas went to Appu Prasad's house and torched it after pouring petrol on the hut. Some of the residents spotted the fire, tipped off the residents, and informed the fire and rescue personnel. Firefighters rushed to the spot and put down the fire after battling for about an hour.

However, four huts, including Appu Prasad's house, were gutted. In one of the victim's houses, a resident, Deepa, and her three children studying in a school were sleeping and had a narrow escape in the fire accident. But they failed to retrieve their school books, notes, and uniforms too.

The police personnel arrested Niwas and his associate, Silambarasan, 20, for torching the houses. The duo was sent to Puzhal prison..
