Certainly in recent times. Presidents and candidates have been shot, injured and killed in the US. Unfortunately, it is nothing new.

Biden claimed that when he got knocked down that he got up again. Trump went one better. Not sure about a sympathy vote but it may change the dynamics of the election and take some of the focus off Biden't debate performance.

The video around the building had someone saying that the first three shots came from the shooter. ABC had the interview with a man saying that he had pointed out the shooter and him moving across the rooftop to law enforcement. The shooter was in camoflauged clothing that was fine for foliage but not for the rooftop.
There may have been some initial confusion as to whether the shooter was part of law enforcement. News conference live. The New York Post reports that Thomas Matthew Crooks has been identified as person who shot at Trump.
