Twin Falls freshman Ava Fleming (11) and Mountain Home senior Roxanna Martinez (1) fight for possession of the ball Tuesday, Sept. 17, 2024, during a girls soccer game between Twin Falls and Mountain Home at the Sunway Soccer Complex in Twin Falls. The Bruins defeated the Tigers, 4-1.

Until then, Twin Falls had a decisive but not exactly commanding lead over Mountain Home, who entered Tuesday’s game 6-0 while outscoring its opponents 38-3. But when Fleming put the ball in the back of the net to finish her hat trick for the final goal of the game, Tackett breathed easy. The Lady Bruins battled through a tough first half before pulling away in the second half to take sole possession of first place in the Great Basin Conference.

“I know that they were nervous about this game,” Tackett told the Times-News . "It’s nice to see they were able to come out here and walk away with a win.” Playing with just one substitute in the first half, Twin Falls looked to take advantage of its speed at forward while withstanding a barrage of Mountain Home attacks on defense.

That strategy worked, as Fleming scoring her first after she outran her defender in the games early minutes. Tigers senior Hailey Eresman tied the game later in the first half and Mountain Home dominated possession after that until Lady Bruins freshman Addi Kohring converted a penalty kick in the final minutes of the first half to put Twin Falls back in front. Fleming scored both Lady Bruins goals in the second half to finish.

Fleming, along with Kohring and Lola Hudson all play key roles on the varsity team as freshmen. Fleming has been one of the team’s leading scorers, while Kohring and Hudson are part of the backline. “When I started out on JV, I didn’t think I was gonna get on varsity,” Fleming told the Times-News .

“When our coach told us there were a few more spots left, I tried hard. I didn’t think I was gonna make it but I obviously did and that feels really good.” After graduating seven seniors, including four all-conference players, Twin Falls is getting contributions from all grades this fall.

Three freshmen, four sophomores, four juniors and five seniors make up the varsity squad. That combination has the Lady Bruins in the mix to repeat as conference champions and advance to its 11th straight state tournament. “Since the beginning of the season the talk about state has been very up front,” senior Mollie Larsen told the Times-News .
