An Indian street-food chain founded by a top entrepreneur and TV chef is planning its first restaurant in the Republic.

In February, the Belfast Telegraph revealed that Mowgli Street Food would be . In its next move, the UK-based Indian street-food business owned by TV presenter Nisha Katona is also set to take up a large restaurant unit in 41-46 South Great George’s Street in Dublin city centre. The company, known for its tiffin boxes and the Mowgli Chip Butty, submitted a planning application two weeks ago seeking approval for works at the unit, including installing an illuminated sign on the building.

The Dublin city centre building comprises a four-storey over-basement mixed-use development with three retail units as well as the restaurant space set to be taken by Mowgli. The upper floors will have a 97-bedroom hotel, fully pre-let to Premier Inn Hotels. Katona previously revealed plans for a Dublin eatery for Mowgli in an interview with Food Service Equipment Journal, a trade magazine.

She said Mowgli had been looking at Dublin, saying it would be a “big deal” working in a different currency. “I build at [a rate of] about five restaurants a year, and the only reason I will do that is if people still want us, and we are still busy, and thankfully, that is still the case,” she said. “You’ve got to be honest – they’re not going to want us if we get super expensive.

It’s so easy to mess this up. That is why you have got to have such a tight rein on absolutely everything.” In 2023, private equity firm TriSpan made a significant investment in Mowgli Street Food.

The deal provided an exit for Foresight which first invested in Mowgli Street Food in 2017 when it had just two sites in Liverpool and one in Manchester. Mowgli Street Food now has more than two dozen locations across the UK including in cities such as London, Bristol, Newcastle, Edinburgh, Glasgow and Cardiff. Katona left behind a career as a child protection barrister – a role she had for 20 years – before starting up her business.

Her first restaurant was launched in 2014 in Liverpool. She has also carved out a career on television, appearing on various programmes on the BBC, ITV and Channel 4. She currently presents a new cooking series ITV called Nisha Katona’s Home Kitchen.
