PM Modi blames Congress for encouraging Naxalism in Chhattisgarh (Picture credit: PTI) NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday accused the Congress of fostering Naxalism in Chhattisgarh and other states, alleging that its decades-long policies allowed the insurgency to grow in backward regions. Speaking at a public rally in Bilaspur’s Mohbhattha village, PM Modi said: “Over the decades, Naxalism got encouragement in many states, including Chhattisgarh, due to policies of Congress. Whichever region lagged in development, Naxalism flourished there, but what did the party that ran the government for 60 years do? It declared such districts as backward and turned away from its responsibility”.
The Prime Minister said that Naxal violence had cost the lives of many innocent people, with families losing their sons and brothers due to the insurgency. He also criticised previous Congress-led governments for their "indifference," accusing them of neglecting the needs of tribal communities. "The (previous) Congress government never took care of the amenities of poor tribals," he said, adding that under the BJP’s "double-engine government," development was bringing peace to Naxal-affected areas.
During his visit, PM Modi launched development projects worth over Rs 33,700 crore across various sectors, including power, rail, road, and housing. He highlighted that under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana-Gramin (PMAY-G), three lakh homes had been completed, fulfilling the dreams of the poor. He also inaugurated 130 PM SHRI schools across Chhattisgarh, emphasising the government’s focus on welfare and development in tribal regions.
