In a surprise development, the Government has swapped Tuhin Kanta Pandey for Arunish Chawla as the new Revenue Secretary. Chwala will take Pandey’s place in the Department of Investment and Public Asset Management (DIPAM). Pandey will continue to be designated as Finance Secretary.
At the same time, Chawla will also have the additional responsibility of Secretary in the Public Enterprises Department in the Culture Ministry, which was earlier held by Pandey, according to an order approved by the Appointment Committee of the Cabinet (ACC). Pandey is the IAS officer from the Odisha cadre and is credited with successfully completing the long-pending sale of the national carrier Air India and overseeing the listing of the national insurer, the Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC). He has a master’s degree in economics from Punjab University and an MBA from the UK.
In his career as a bureaucrat, the IAS officer has served in various capacities both in Odisha and at the central level Chawla was appointed as Revenue Secretary on December 25. 1992-batch Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer of the Bihar cadre, Chawla served as the Secretary in the Department of Pharmaceuticals in the Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilisers since November 1, 2023. Before serving as Secretary in the Department of Pharmaceuticals, Chawla served as the Managing Director of the Metro Rail Project Patna; and on Foreign Assignment through the Department of Economic Affairs as the Senior Economist, International Monetary Fund; Minister (Economic), Embassy of India in Washington DC; and also as Joint Secretary in the Department of Expenditure, Ministry of Finance.
Chawla also did his Masters and Doctorate in Economics from the London School of Economics. Comments.
