As I considered the impact of the Trump tariffs on my retirement account on Friday, I assumed some of my Republican buddies must have felt at least a little unease as well. Similarly, as I fumed over the administration’s refusal to comply with a court order to return legal resident Kilmar Abrego Garcia, deported without cause or due process, I wondered how my Trump-supporting lawyer friends felt about our president’s disregard for constitutional rights. And then this from the White House: “The President won his second round (golf) matchup of the Senior Club Championship today .

.. and advances to the Championship Round tomorrow.

” And with that, we knew what Trump thought, amid so much chaos, was most important to the American people: his golf game. As we face a constitutional crisis, a recession, Veterans Affairs and Medicaid cuts, government job losses, an interruption to cancer research, a measles outbreak, the compromising of our personal and corporate tax information, and countless other Trump-inspired crises, I can’t help but think this tone-deafness might be a small hint to some of my MAGA friends that the world can be collapsing around regular people, even his most loyal supporters, and Trump’s only priority will remain Trump. Period.

Like his golf wins, Trump’s destruction of our democracy and his march towards autocracy require complicit enablers, who stand quietly by. Is it time, regardless of how you voted, to speak out, or is Trump, and not our country, your highest priority? Bill Green Winston-Salem An open letter to Sen. Thom Tillis: Thank you for standing against President Trump’s insane tariffs that will probably cause a worldwide recession.

I agree with you that Americans are deeply divided and upset with a Congress that seems to get nothing done to help them. Trump has been able to tap into the deeply embedded racism in this country and use this to convince many ordinary Americans that he has the answer to their problems. He has done nothing to help us and his actions worsen our lives and increase our division.

I believe you care about our country and your constituents. You list your accomplishments as a senator that you are rightfully proud of: working to pass President Biden’s Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act; working to help our fellow North Carolinians receive disaster relief to recover from Hurricane Helene; working to help veterans by helping pass the VA Mission Act. Yet you watch Trump destroy these programs.

The traditional Republican Party to which you belonged has been destroyed by Trump and his MAGA cult. I do not believe you are a MAGA cult member. You and like-minded senators can band together and save our country from Trump’s insanity.

Please do not sit back and watch him destroy our institutions of democracy that have made our country great. Congress is a separate and equal branch of government. You took an oath to uphold the Constitution when you became a senator.

Please, Mr. Tillis, do your job. Kerry Eckhardt Winston-Salem I’d planned to go to the Winston Salem Hands Off protest Sunday with two friends.

We made signs. We were very enthusiastic about participating in the protest. Then I got a message at 9:30 Friday night from the local Winston-Salem organizers.

They stated: “Feel free to bring your protest signs to the rally but understand that the speakers will not be focused on this message. If you are looking for a Hands-Off protest focused on national events, there is one planned in Greensboro from 12:00 p.m.

to 2:00 p.m.” This is not what had been advertised all week.

I decided not to attend. Then I read an online article (“Local group: Event isn’t to protest,” April 4) on the local protest that reported: “Camel City United, the local Indivisible chapter for Winston-Salem, appeared to have put most of the planning effort behind Saturday’s event, which they insisted in the days leading up to the rally was ‘not a protest’ of the Trump administration.” No one informed me this was not a protest of the Trump administration! That is what the Hands-Off movement is all about.
