IT’S going to be a tsunami and the waves just keeps on rolling for Simak Auto Marine Tsuanami as the competition leaders head into the remainder of regular rounds this weekend. The Simak Auto Marine sponsored Tsunami team are in for the major prize as they take on Executive Security Systems (ESS) Scorpions 2 and Pool Shop Cassowary Rangers this Saturday. This weekend’s challenge signals the Guard Dog Security Services (GDSS) Lae City Corporate 8-Ball Pool Challenge final two weekends of normal rounds at the Aviat Club in Lae.

Competition Media manager Sylvester Gawi said this round games will determine whether Tsunami holds on to the top position or gets unsettled by the bottom teams. Gawi said second placed JJ Investments Limited are expecting an uphill battle when they take on fourth placed GDSS Doggies in the opening games at 2pm. JJIL an all Filipino outfit will be facing the bite of the canines who are desperate for a surge to the top of the table.

“An experienced David & David Lawyers Enforcers side who are three-points ahead of fourth placed GDSS Doggies will be looking at maintaining the third spot when they meet an inexperienced Vodafone Smooth Operators 2 in the 6pm Saturday match,” Gawi said. He added D&D Enforcers suffered a shocking loss to the Tsunami on Tuesday night and will be looking at giving their best against their opponents in the remaining games. Gawi said Market movers and fifth placed Pia’hu Consultancy Rack & Fire are equal contenders in the top four positions when they take on Smooth Operators 2.

Rack & Fire led in the opening rounds but slightly dropped in their last few games. Competition chairman Ben Johnson is adamant that the normal round games are completed on time with the finals set for the end of this month. “We have a few new teams joining the competition this year and that is a testament of the growth of Snooker (8 Ball) in Lae and Morobe,” said Ben Johnson who is also the Aviat Club vice president.

Johnson also thanked corporate companies and individuals who have put in teams for the competition adding that the interest and talent has grown over the last two months of competition. Notable teams making a mark in the competition are NKW Group Frozen Niners, Aviat Pokies Rebels, ESS Scorpions 1, ESS Scorpions 2, Cassowary Rangers and Vodafone Smooth Operators 1 all making strides to be in the top eight by the end of the normal rounds. Aviat Club president Karo Gamoga said the Lae City Corporate Challenge is one of the biggest competitions in the Lae Billiard & Snooker Association (LBSA) that received overwhelming support since its inception a few years ago.

“We are grateful to have Guard Dog Group sponsoring the tournament in 2024 with K10,000. “The Aviat Club continues to have Snooker games scheduled on our calendar annually and is proud to host successful tournaments like the Rosso Super 4s challenge and other club tournaments this year,” said Gamoga. Gamoga added that despite being a small members club, Aviat continues to promote good discipline and creating a conducive and friendly environment for its patrons, members and guests.
