Donald Trump’s victory in the US presidential election has not made Ukraine any less safe, John Healey insisted this morning. The Defence Secretary said Nato nations had recently recommitted to “stepping up support” for Kyiv at a time when Russia is “weakening”. Mr Healey made the remarks as Sir Keir Starmer was due to attend an Armistice commemoration in Paris this morning when he will also hold talks with Emmanuel Macron.
Asked if he believed the safety of Ukraine had fallen since Mr Trump’s victory last week, Mr Healey told Sky News: “No, I don’t. The US alongside the UK have been two of the leading countries that have been standing by Ukraine, supporting Ukraine. “Our determination to do so is just as strong and I was at a Nato defence ministers meeting just two weeks ago when all Nato nations recommitted to stepping up support for Ukraine at this time when they are under pressure but Russia is weakening.
” Mr Trump’s victory has prompted questions about what will happen to US support for Ukraine. He talked about ending the war on “day one” throughout his presidential campaign, leading to fears he could attempt to force Kyiv to accept land lost to Russia.
