President-elect Donald Trump tapped Republican Florida Rep. Mike Waltz on Monday to take on the role of White House national security adviser, The Wall Street Journal reported. Waltz, a veteran Green Beret, has served in Afghanistan, the Middle East and Africa, according to WSJ.
Since his election to Congress in 2019, Waltz has urged stronger European support for Ukraine and advocated for a more disciplined approach to U.S. aid, aligning with a major foreign policy objective of the president-elect.
Waltz had expressed his interest in joining the administration and was previously seen as a contender to lead the Pentagon, WSJ reported. During Trump’s first term, the role of national security advisor saw significant turnover. Michael Flynn resigned after only weeks in the job amid scrutiny over contacts with Russia, followed by H.
R. McMaster, John Bolton, and Robert O’Brien, WJS noted. Trump also tapped New York Republican Rep.
Elise Stefanik to serve as the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations.
