President Donald Trump marked his 100th day in office with a rally in Warren, Michigan, on Tuesday, where he touted his immigration crackdown, defended his economic record, attacked judges blocking his agenda and dismissed polls showing his approval rating at near-record lows as “fake.” It was his first campaign event since winning the 2024 election, and even though he is term-limited, Trump seemed to be relishing speaking to a friendly audience in Macomb County. It came amid a turbulent first few months of his presidency with tanking financial markets, waning global trust and flashing signs of an economic recession.
“I miss you guys. I miss the campaign,” Trump told his supporters at one point. Trump signed an executive order ahead of his visit putting a pause on some of the 25% import tariffs he had imposed on autos and other car components, providing critical relief to Detroit’s automakers.
It was his latest walk back to the global tariffs he announced earlier this year that have angered U.S. allies and unnerved top business executives and Republicans on Capitol Hill.
“I’m giving them a little bit of a break, right?” Trump said of the automakers. “Somebody would say, ‘Oh, well, that’s a change.’ It’s not, it’s called a little flexibility.
The guys were crying. They love it. Everything’s good.
” Trump insisted that grocery prices and egg prices are coming down, despite evidence to the contrary , and he defended his administration’s border crackdown, faulting federal judges for giving him “a hard time” by blocking many of his executive orders. “Judges are trying to take away the power given to the president to keep our country safe, and it’s not a good thing,” Trump said. “But I hope for the sake of our country that the Supreme Court is going to save this.
” According to CNN , Trump has a 41% approval rating, the lowest for any newly elected president at 100 days dating back at least to President Dwight Eisenhower. His approval rating on the economy is down 5 points from March to a career low of 39%. It’s not just CNN showing Trump’s public opinion woes, either.
A Fox News survey this week found his approval at 44%. “They do these polls where they interview far more Democrats than Republicans,” Trump claimed without evidence on Tuesday. “These people are a bunch of crooked people.
” “We’ve accomplished more in three months than most administrations accomplished in four years, or even eight years, and we’re just getting started,” he added. “Believe me, we’re just getting started.”.
