U.S. President Donald Trump has hinted on social media that the U.
S. could join the British Commonwealth. The commonwealth is an association of 56 countries including Great Britain and a number of its former colonies including Canada, India, Pakistan, Australia, South Africa, Kenya, New Zealand, the Bahamas, Jamaica, Guyana, Malta, Maldives, Nigeria and Ghana.
The Commonwealth is headed by the U.K.’s King Charles.
It is a titular and symbolic position. The Commonwealth is a voluntary remnant organization of the British Empire, which lost its colonial realms during and after World War II. The overtures — whether they entail some sort of commonwealth membership or affiliation — are likely aimed at reducing U.S. tensions with Canada.
Trump has imposed tariffs on imports of steel and aluminum (including from Canada), imposed other tariffs and has threatened more over the flows of fentanyl into the US, as well as reciprocal levies to those that are put on American goods. Trump also wants to make Canada a U.S.
state, upsetting Canadians. Trump has been invited for a state visit to the U.K.
by King Charles. British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, left, hands an invitation from King Charles III to President Donald Trump at the White House, Thursday, Feb. 27, 2025, in Washington.

S., of course, gained independence from Britain in 1783 after the Revolutionary War. Commonwealth countries currently do not have special trade relations.
