True life drama starring Bolton actors among the most watched in the UK

A true crime adaptation of the notorious Moors Murderers starring Bolton's Maxine Peake and Matthew McNulty is becoming one of the most watched shows in the UK.

A true crime adaptation of the notorious Moors Murderers starring Bolton's Maxine Peake and Matthew McNulty is becoming one of the most watched shows in the UK. The 2006’s See No Evil: The Moors Murders is currently showing on Netflix. The streaming giant added the haunting drama just days ago, and it quickly became second most watched programme.

It received critical and public praise for the way it remained true to the facts without sensationalising the horrific crimes, which still shock today. Her chilling portrayal of Hindley demonstrated her talents extended way beyond comedy.

Since then, the former Westhoughton High School pupil who comes from Horwich, has become one of the country’s leading stage and screen actresses. See No Evil: The Moors Murders was hailed for its attention to detail, with scenes being filmed at the true-life locations. These included Saddleworth Moor and Chester Crown Court.

Matthew McNulty Some family members of their five victims – Pauline Reade, John Kilbride, Keith Bennett, Lesley Ann Downey and Edward Evans – were consulted to ensure the material was treated sensitively. Bolton-based Matthew , played Myra Hindley’s brother-in-law, David Smith in the drama, and as part of his research, he spent time with the real David Smith. It was Smith who helped bring the Moors Murderers to justice after witnessing Brady savagely kill Edward Evans at the house in Hattersley, where the evil pair lived with Hindley’s grandmother.

Hindley died in 2002 in West Suffolk Hospital at the age of 60, after serving 36 years in prison. Brady, died in 2017 at the age of 79, after serving 51 years. Matthew's list of credits include The Bay, The Musketeers.
