The creators of the hit podcast “Father Wants Us Dead” have dropped their next gripping true crime series about a New Jersey killing steeped in mystery and Ivy League intrigue. “In the Shadow of Princeton” is an investigative deep-dive into the 1989 cold-case killing of Emily “Cissy” Stuart, the feisty matriarch of an old Princeton family that ran the local newspaper.

First released on Wondery+ and now free wherever you get podcasts, “In the Shadow of Princeton” hit No. 7 on Apple Podcasts' true crime charts and No. 22 for all podcasts in the U.

S. Emily "Cissy" Stuart, a well-known character in Princeton, was found murdered in her basement April 4, 1989. File photo/police photo Cissy Stuart — forthright, caring, and tough enough to chop her own firewood — downed a bloody mary and set out to do some yard work on a warm spring day in 1989.

But someone stabbed Cissy in the back five times as she stood inside a basement room under her porch where she kept gardening tools. The killer then carefully padlocked the exterior door and vanished. Investigators from around the state descended on her stately property a block from campus, but they found few clues: no murder weapon, no sign of robbery or ransacking, no obvious reason anyone would want to kill the grande dame of Princeton.

" In the Shadow of Princeton “ follows the investigation of this murder — a “Zodiac”-like maze of leads and dead ends that stretches over 35 years. The basement room where Cissy Stuart was killed was accessible by a few steps down under the side porch. The first black door goes to a root cellar.

The second door, to the room where she was found, is hidden in shadow. Everett co-reported “Father Wants Us Dead ‚" an award-winning series named one of Apple Podcasts’ top new shows of 2022 and one of the best true crime podcasts of all time by Entertainment Weekly.

For " In the Shadow of Princeton ," Shea and Everett tracked down witnesses and retired investigators, reviewed police documents and even a Princeton student senior thesis and traveled across the U.S. to get answers to the case’s biggest questions.
