Pune: A truck ran over a 25-year-old man at Kirkatwadi near Sinhagad Road late on Friday night. The driver, however, pushed the severely injured victim into a nullah and fled without informing the police. The local residents called the Nanded City police on Saturday morning and stated that ‘somebody murdered a man and threw his body in the nullah'.
Senior inspector Atul Bhos of Nanded City police told TOI, "Our team reached the spot and pulled out the injured man from the nullah. He was severely injured. He was shifted to the Sassoon General Hospital , where he was declared dead on arrival.
" "We have identified the deceased as Devanand Margutte (25) of Kirkatwadi," he said. Bhos said, "We initially thought that it was a murder case due to the injuries on his head, but a close study of the CCTV footage revealed that it was an accident." "The footage showed that Margutte, a casual worker, came out of an eatery on the Sinhagad Road and went to the stationary truck parked nearby.
The deceased was sleeping near the truck's rear tyre. The truck driver was seen coming to the truck and without checking anything, he climbed the truck's cabin and started it. Margutte's head came under the rear tyre," Bhos said.
"However, instead of alerting the police or rushing Margutte to a hospital, the truck driver pushed the unconscious man in the nullah," Bhos said. "We have registered a case of rash and negligent driving against the truck driver and have served him a notice asking him to cooperate with the investigations," he said.
