GRAND FORKS — The Edmonton Oilers traded to get Troy Stecher for their playoff run last season. It didn't work out that way. Stecher suffered a season-ending ankle injury that required surgery.

Stecher was unable to play in the postseason, though he was with the Oilers for their entire playoff ride that lasted until a Game 7 loss in the Stanley Cup Final to Florida. But Stecher will get another chance to make a run with the Oilers. Stecher signed a two-year, $1.

58 million deal with Edmonton on Monday, the first day of the NHL's free agency period. According to CapFriendly, Stecher will make $775,000 in 2024-25 and $800,000 in 2025-26. Stecher played in 47 games for the Arizona Coyotes last season and seven with the Oilers before his injury.

The 5-foot-10, 184-pound defender, who went undrafted, is about to surpass 500 NHL regular-season games. He's played 494 with the Vancouver Canucks, Detroit Red Wings, Los Angeles Kings, Arizona Coyotes, Calgary Flames and Oilers. Stecher has scored 19 goals and tallied 110 points.

Stecher has been a perennial winner throughout his career. In junior hockey, he led Penticton to a British Columbia Hockey League title and a Canadian Junior A national championship. Stecher came to UND in 2013-14 and played three seasons in college, helping UND to three-straight NCAA Frozen Fours.

As a junior, he played a key role in leading UND to the 2016 NCAA national championship. He signed with his hometown Vancouver Canucks after the 2016 Frozen Four. A.
