Trinity Church will present the New York premiere of Gabriel Kahane’s oratorio “emergency shelter intake” form on Oct. 24, 2024. The piece was scored for a large orchestra, a soprano soloist, and a trio of soloists.

The work explores the various aspects of America’s housing crisis and addresses eviction, the practical difficulties of being unhoused, the frustratingly bureaucratic process of securing low-income housing, and the societal challenges of constructing more affordable living. The oratorio combines different musical styles to narrate a story that reflects a deep concern for human welfare. In a statement, Kahane said, “I’m interested in working at the level of the psychological experience of economic precarity and what that does to a mind, a heart, a spirit.

But if you leave it at that, you run the risk of offering the audience emotional catharsis through somebody else’s trauma, without contextualizing it in the framework of our broken economy, and the ways in which we are all implicated in the perpetuation of the economic status quo.” The performance will feature Trinity’s contemporary ensemble NOVUS, featuring soprano Alicia Hall Moran, the chorus of inconvenient statistics, Gabriel Kahane, Holland Andrews, and Holcombe Waller, the Choirs from the Borough of Manhattan Community College, and Daniela Candillari as conductor.
