Former three-time boxing world champion Israel Vazquez has sadly passed away aged 46 following a battle with cancer. The former WBC super bantamweight champion retired in 2010 with a record of 44-5. Many fans will remember his jaw-dropping four-fight series with fellow Mexican, Rafael Marquez.

After losing the first meeting, Vazquez won the next two contests, before losing the fourth via knockout in the third round. Vazquez held the IBF title from 2004 to 2005 as well as holding the WBC and The Ring titles between 2005 and 2008. With 32 of his 44 wins coming by way of knockout, the Mexican star was a real entertainer every time he stepped foot inside the squared-circle.

WBC president Mauricio Sulaiman confirmed the news and paid tribute to Vazquez on X - formerly known as Twitter - writing: " Israel Vazquez is finally resting in peace. May God give strength and support to his wife, Laura, their children, family, and friends during these difficult times. Thank you, Israel, for the many great memories you have given us through your actions inside the ring but most importantly outside of it.

You are now eternal. Rest in peace, and everything will be all right.", reports the Mirror .

Vazquez stepped into the professional boxing ring in 1995 at just 17 years old and swiftly secured victories in his first nine bouts before facing his initial career loss on his tenth fight. It took him nine years to clinch a major world title when he triumphed over Jose Luis Valbuena. After the news of Vazquez's passing emerged, tributes began flooding in.

Celebrated boxing trainer Freddie Roach was quoted saying: "Forever a world champion and legend in boxing. One of the best boxers I ever had the privilege of working with – a world champion. Israel, my friend, may you rest in peace now.

My condolences to the Vazquez family and to all those who called Israel their friend." Meanwhile, Australian boxing figure Billy Dib expressed his sorrow: "Heartbroken to hear about the passing of Israel Vázquez after his courageous battle with cancer. He was not only a champion but also a true warrior in and out of the ring.

My heartfelt condolences go out to his family, friends, and all who admired him. May he rest in peace." George Kambosos Jr took to social media to honour Vazquez, writing: "RIP legend," and adding, "Was an honour to have met you, absolute warrior of the game.

My condolences to his family and friends.".
