THE TRIBES Coffee club men’s and women’s teams have scraped through to qualify for the Grand Final in the POM Elite Basketball competition. During the preliminary finals last Wednesday at the Sir John Guise Indoor Stadium, the men held off Togoba Coffee winning 76-62, while the women managed to outlast the Saints in an extra-time thriller after they were drawn 54-54 at full-time, and going on to win 63-57. Men’s coach Silas Nicky accredited the win to the bench that came on to complete the job after members of their starting five in Cornelius Muri, skipper Colin Pine, Allan Millard and Eddie Moses did the job to lay the foundation from the start.

He said it was important to lead from the start and that’s the foundation that the starting five laid before the bench came on. With regards to the forthcoming Grand Final, Nicky said Amesii is a strong team with several PNG representatives, to which they will hope to counter by sticking to a simple game plan with focus on their defence. Nicky took the opportunity to acknowledge the Tribes Coffee management and staff and supporters for their valuable contribution to the club.

Both teams will play Civpac Amesii in the Grand Final at the Taurama Aquatic Indoor Courts..
