Pune: A specialised training for 30 cyber commandos from the ministry of home affairs to counter all possible cyber threats has commenced on Tuesday at the Defence Institute of Advanced Technology (DIAT), a deemed university of the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), near Pune. The training programme, with a syllabus finalized by the home ministry and DIAT, is part of the ministry's initiative to bolster cyber defence capabilities across the country. Nine institutes have started similar training programmes across the country.
The training will continue for the next six months. Manisha Nena, the head of department of computer science and engineering at DIAT, told TOI, "We will conduct training in diverse aspects of cyber security including managing security incidents, methods of auditing digital infrastructure and the modus operandi of cybercriminals. We will focus on real cases in detail to understand the nitty-gritty of the cases.
" The cyber commando initiative aligns with the home ministry's Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre (I4C) and forms part of a decision to establish specialised wings of cyber commandos within police forces across the country. Deputy inspector general of police (State Cyber) Sanjay Shintre, who heads the cybercrime investigation capacity centre at Mahape in Navi Mumbai, told TOI, "These cyber commandos will play a critical role in investigating complex cybercrime cases. They will also train our personnel.
We need a fresh approach to deal with cybercrime cases." To deal with cybercrime effectively and efficiently, the ministry plans to raise about 5,000 cyber commandos over the next five years. The officers' cadre of police sub-inspectors and inspectors is among the participants.
Out of 30 officers at DIAT, four are from Maharashtra police, said a DIAT officer. The ministry has selected 246 cyber commandos from law enforcement agencies, including the police force. They are attending courses at IIT Madras, IIT Kanpur, IIIT Kottayam, IIIT Naya Raipur, Rashtriya Raksha University (RRU) Gandhinagar, Defence Institute of Advanced Technology (DIAT) Pune, National Forensic Science University (NFSU) Gandhinagar, and Delhi.
