A byre-style house could be the latest new build to be erected on the Summer Isles, under plans lodged with Highland Council. Summer Isles Enterprises Ltd has applied for permission to build a one-storey stone house on land 130 metres to the south of The Old Inn on Tanera Mhor. The building will be one-storey tall, be located on land currently occupied by an overgrown stone ruin, and feature a bedroom and a bathroom.

A design statement submitted with the application said the new building's small size is a result of its intended use as a small byre ancillary to the neighbouring Cookies cottage. Its exterior will feature Torridonian sandstone walls, a central door and turf roof designed to blend in with the surrounding landscape. The rear of the building will be built into the hillside.

The statement said: "[This will be a] stone clad cottage with a traditional symmetrical appearance, central door and windows either side with a hipped roof. "The byre will be ancillary to Cookies cottage with just a bedroom and bathroom. "Finished with an intensive turf roof planted with grasses surrounding the site.

This will allow it blend into its immediate surroundings and with the properties nearby also. "The building will be built in block providing a large thermal mass inside the insulation envelope. With a highly insulated building envelope the building will have an underfloor heating system powered by an air source heat pump that will also provide hot water.
