Pune: With temperatures surging, what better way to stay cool than by consuming refreshing homemade drinks. It's not just the usual nimboo pani or buttermilk, but other traditional concoctions that are supposed to be excellent hydrating agents. "My grandmother used to tell me about certain ingredients like fennel seeds, cucumber, and mint, which, if consumed in different proportions, could lend a cooling effect on the body.

It is much better than the aerated or sugary drinks available in the market," said Sailee Rana, a resident of Wanowrie. "This is the season of mangoes, and there is nothing better than a refreshing glass of homemade aam panna. We take mango pulp and blend it with cumin and mint leaves and drink it chilled.

It boosts immunity, aids digestion, and, of course, provides hydration. I keep it ready for my children when they are back from school in the afternoon," said Heena Darji, a resident of Hadapsar. Leena Jha, who spent the early part of her childhood in Patna, said that she remembers drinking sattu sharbat on sunny days back home.

"The best part of it is that it is not only refreshing but also filling. It is also a good source of protein and fibre, so it keeps me energetic through the day," she said. Nutritionist Sapna Tomar has been telling her clients to consume desi khus sharbat, bel sharbat, mogra sharbat, gulkand sharbat, and amla sharbat.

"Coconut water with chia seeds is also a good combination. These drinks can be made from scratch at home. They not only keep you away from heat strokes but also keep the gut alkaline and are rich in minerals," she said.

Nutritionists also said that drinking fennel seeds water can be an instant way of cooling one's body and keeping acidity at bay. "It helps regulate body temperature and stimulates the secretion of digestive juices. All you need to do is boil some fennel seeds in water, strain the water, and then cool it.

This recipe has worked for almost all my clients," said a nutritionist based in Girgaon, Mumbai. Imli dhania ka sharbat can also be a perfect addition to the summer drink list. This drink is packed with vitamin C and other nutrients.

Jaggery can be added to it to enhance the flavour. Get the latest lifestyle updates on Times of India, along with Navratri Wishes , Eid Messages and quotes !.
