The utilities company is using the road closure to bore holes to find and fix a gas leak close to the railway bridge. The closure will start from A363 eastern junction with the Trinity Roundabout and end at its junction with Station Approach. The order came into operation on Saturday, October 26 and the closure will now last until Sunday, November 3.
READ MORE: Stallard Street in Trowbridge closed for gas works The closure of the through route into Trowbridge town centre has led to long queues, delays and congestion during peak hours in the early morning and late afternoon. At times, it has led to the town being gridlocked as drivers follow the diversion into Newtown, Mortimer Street and County Way. The Bristol-based bus company, First Bus, has warned passengers of “severe disruption” to its D1 and D1X services between Trowbridge and Bath.
Furious drivers have taken to social media to complain and some say the number of road works and the road closure affecting Trowbridge could have been better managed by Wiltshire Council. The Wiltshire Times has contacted the local authority for a comment but is still waiting for its response. A post on Trowbridge Town Council's Facebook page reads: "Wiltshire Council have given notice that work being carried out along Stallard Street has been extended for 4 days ending 3rd November.
"The closure will start from A363 eastern junction with Trinity Roundabout and end at its junction with Station Approach. "This order came into operation on 26 October 2024 and the closure will be in affect until 3rd November." Alan Bickerstaff, Wales & West Utilities gas emergency service manager, said: "We are working in the Stallard Street area of Trowbridge to repair a number of small leaks on the gas pipe running beneath the road.
“In agreement with Wiltshire Council, and in order to keep the local community, road users and our colleagues safe while we work, Stallard Street is closed at its junctions with Station Approach and Wingfield Road. We are working as safely and as quickly as we can to stop the leak and reopen the road. “We’re sorry for any inconvenience our work might be causing and we appreciate the patience and understanding of local residents and road users while we carry out this essential repair. “Whilst it is important that we fix this leak now, it does not pose any serious safety concerns and there is no impact on local gas supplies.
