I love a good tower defense. Tower Dominion boasts a very popular demo on Steam and finally announced, after nearly a year of updates, that they have a release date planned. May 8th, 2025, is a fine day to get into a roguelike tower defense games, and more importantly, it’s just next month.
A short wait is fine by me, let’s see what we’ll be doing in Tower Dominion.[embedded content]Tower defense games initially became popular as UMS Warcraft III/Starcraft game modes created by players. Essentially a riff on gameplay created by older, less sophisticated titles like Rampart and even Missile Command, tower defense games would peak in popularity thanks to Adobe Flash.
Games like Desktop Tower Defense and Bloons Tower Defense would become extremely popular titles and eventually make their way to smart phones. Eventually we’d see even further iterations with games like PixelJunk Monsters, Defense Grid: The Awakening, and Fieldrunners. With the genre lending itself to wave-like gameplay it naturally paired well with roguelike elements.
Similar to roguelike tower defense titles like Rogue Tower, Tower Dominion has you build out the enemy path as part of the turn-order. A seasoned tower defensemen will be able to use these terrain bricks to funnel enemies into chokepoints for massive damage but a newbie might struggle and just leak enemies right into their base. It’s an interesting concept, almost like the flip-side of mazing in older titles where you build towers to determine the enemy’s route.
Tower Dominion also introduces factions & heroes to add some real-time gameplay aspects to the wave-based tower defense, having the player deploy units and shape your defenses.The trailer shows a robust upgrading system for towers, strategy elements like base placement and access placement. Tower Dominion looks to be a strong contender in a perhaps underutilized genre.
The Steam page outlines that you’ll unlock building upgrades, heroes through achievements, and lots of other secrets to discover.
