STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- Two Totten Intermediate School (I.
S. 34) teachers, both occupational therapists at the school, are running the NYC marathon this year, Ryan Doherty and Christine Kanarick. Kanarick has been chosen to run with Team TCS Teachers at the 2024 TCS New York City Marathon.
Ryan Doherty is running with the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation Breathe team. Kanarick and Doherty brainstormed an idea while chatting with a fellow marathoner in training and a close co-worker, which is pure gold, said Kanarick, to help Doherty find a way to raise funds for the marathon. They wanted to organize a ‘micro marathon’ to raise funds for Doherty’s charity - Cystic Fibrosis.
Principal John Boyle agreed it would fit nicely with the sixth grade Field Day, giving purpose to their march around the school. Students contributed anywhere from $2 to $5 to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation Breathe team. Kanarick said, “This was a fantastic way to get the entire school community involved and to emphasize how everyone can do something small and still make a big difference.
