Torremolinos celebrates the Roscón de Reyes Route with the participation of 14 pastry shops and bakeries spread out around the different neighbourhoods of the town. Step aside, gingerbread and Yule logs, in Spain, what everyone gets most excited about is the roscón de Reyes. Throughout the country in late December and early January, families sit down to enjoy extravagant holiday feasts that last for hours and fill them fit to burst.
The main meal varies a lot from family to family, so there tend not to be fixed customs such as a roast bird. Roscón is a sweet, round, or oval-shaped cake with a bread-like texture and often a sweet, creamy filling inside and candied fruit adorning the top, giving it the appearance of a jewelled crown.
Hidden inside the roscón is an ‘haba’, or dried fava bean. Tradition says if you find this in your mouth after taking a bite, you must buy the roscón next Christmas. Also inside is usually a little ceramic figurine of one of the three kings.
This is said to bring you luck throughout the rest of the year. This year, Torremolinos bakers are competing to make the town’s best roscón. Customers can vote on which was the best after Christmas.
The roscones are also sold in varying sizes and can often be bought by the slice. Cake shops participating include: participate in ‘Sureña’, ‘Panadería El Calvario’, ‘Panadería Francisco’, ‘Pastelería Polichinela’, ‘Pastelería Castillo’, ‘Panadería San Francisco’, ‘Granier Torremolinos’, ‘El Molí’, ‘Dulcypan’, ‘La Tahona Playamar’, ‘Panadería Mijaspan’, ‘Granier Carihuela’, ‘Casa Kiki’ and ‘Pastelería Begove’..
