Sir Iain Duncan Smith told Kemi Badenoch’s shadow cabinet it will need to deploy the tactics of guerrilla warfare to take on Labour and return the Tories to power. The former leader of the Conservative Party and veteran cabinet minister revealed he addressed Mrs Badenoch’s new top team when it met for the first time yesterday. He outlined the “very hard, difficult task” of being in opposition, comparing it to taking on a “Leviathan on the other side which has all the resources, all the money, all the civil service” He advised the Tories to “strike when you’re least expected to” in order to get Labour into trouble.

Told that it sounded like “guerrilla warfare”, he told GB News: “Well, for the opposition it is. It is essentially a form of [guerrilla warfare] because that’s what you want. That’s what the public want.

“They want to know that you’re on the front foot and holding them to account no matter what, so they don’t get away with some of these flip decisions like banning this and banning that, or raising taxes. You’re going to be on the side of those who have to pick up the bill.” You can join the conversation in the comments section .
